Board manufacturer Stora Enso has invested in a new crane for its factory in Imatra, Finland. The crane was purchased from the local crane builder Satateräs Oy in Siikainen and will be used within the packaging board production process. Therefore the crane had to be equipped with a number of special features in order to meet the high demands for the job.

The crane has a SWL of 64.000 kg at a span of 19,72 m with an overall lifting height of 13 m. The crane was constructed with steel box girders and has a total weight of 28.360 kg. Multiply hoists were required, three double girder hoist NOVA from SWF Krantechnik with lifting capacities of 60.000 kg (FEM 2m), 32.000 kg (FEM 2m) and 64.000 kg (FEM 1Am).

For smooth and precise load lifting and traveling, all motions are equipped with stepless frequency inverter controls, HoistMaster, TravelMaster and MicroMove. A key issue for the design was the individual hoist usage, the electrical control has been designed to offer Stora Enso the best possible usage. Hoist selection can be either hoist I, II or III individually, of tandem operation I+II, I+III or II+III.

Another feature that will assist in the cranes overall performance in years to come, is the NovaMaster condition monitoring system. Each hoist has this system fitted, the lifting motion is monitored at all times to ensure a safe and precise usage, exact communication between the hoists is guaranteed. Furthermore the 64.000 kg hoists is also equipped with a motorized hook block, for motorized load swiveling and a special ramshorn hook (double hook) forging, again another necessity for this industry.

Control is via a special wireless radio control system, additionally a push button station was also supplied to act as a back-up in emergency cases. Last but not least, a further safety aspect is the warning system, light and sound, which is activated for all traveling movements.    

The crane components for this special crane were all supplied in kit form, from the German hoist manufacturer SWF Krantechnik GmbH, Mannheim, the long time partner of Satateräs Oy.
