10t Gantry crane running on a 70 m runway

A German-French consortium between Areva NP and Siemens are currently constructing the fifth North European Nuclear power station in West Finland. The name of the project OL3 is taken from the name of the location Olkiluoto, the total costs of the project have been estimated at 3 Billion Euros.

In order to optimise the warehouse facilities of the power station, a 10t Gantry crane was ordered from a local independent crane builder, Satateräs Oy who have their headquaters in Siikainen, near Pori. The crane will be used to load and unload incoming lorries. The crane runway has a total length of 70 m, which is smoothly negotiated with a maximum crane travelling speed of 25 m/min. The span of the crane is 8 m and the total height 7,9 m, with a total crane weight of 6000 kg.

For the execution of this project Satateräs used a taylor-made designed crane kit from Mannheim. It was not only the hoist, but also many other components such as the control devices and electrics, which were supplied by the lifting equipment specialist SWF Krantechnik GmbH. A NOVA electric double girder wire rope hoist with standard frequency inverter control for smooth stepless cross travelling was used. This advanced technology was also used for the cranes long travelling motion, meaning that a smooth and safe transportation of the load could be guaranteed. The NOVA wire rope hoist has a maximum load of 10000 kg and a capable lifting height of  7 m. The complete crane is controlled by a radio remote control system. Additionally Satateräs also used a special drive system, the power for which was supplied via a motor powered cable reel drum from Wampfler.

Within a seven week time period the Satateräs team, led by Managing Director Juha Paukkunen, were able to manufacture, install and commission the complete crane system together with its 70 m runway, they also finished the project by giving a detailed training for the future users. Prior to this project Satateräs had already supplied cranes and hoist from SWF Krantechnik to several other OL3 project suppliers. In the production facilities in Siikainen, Satateräs are currently working on four 12,5 t double girder cranes with NOVA electric wire rope hoists for a customer in Russia.
